One of the world’s leading car rental companies, Hertz, announced a hacker attack that occurred last fall. As a result, criminals became aware of customers’ personal data. The company has not yet specified the number of victims or the geography of the leak, writes Tech Crunch.
The cyberattack was recorded between October and December 2024. Hackers stole data, including names, dates of birth, phone numbers, driver’s licenses, and bank cards. Some customers’ social security and health insurance numbers, as well as other personal information, became known to outsiders.
Hertz has not yet disclosed information about which countries and in what volumes the data was stolen. However, notifications about the hacker attack have been posted on the company’s official websites in the US, Canada, UK, EU, Australia, and New Zealand. At least 3,400 victims are known in the US state of Maine and more than 96 thousand in Texas.
Hertz representatives noted that it would be incorrect to talk about millions of stolen sets of personal information. But, apparently, we are talking about hundreds of thousands of customers.
