Taxi apps work well in Baku — so a rental car has to earn its place. Honestly: for some trips it does not. Here is the fair breakdown we give guests who ask.
When taxis win
- You stay 2–3 days entirely inside central Baku: the centre is compact and walkable, rides are short, and parking knowledge means nothing to you.
- Your plans are mostly evenings out — nobody should drive after drinks anyway.
When a rental car wins
- Any day outside the city. Taxis to Gabala, Guba or Sheki are priced for the round trip whether or not you return the same day, and waiting time is yours to pay. A day in the regions by taxi routinely costs more than an entire day of an economy rental (55 AZN) plus fuel.
- An active family day. Five or six app rides with a child — hotel, mall, boulevard, restaurant, back — add up quickly, and none of those taxis carries a child seat. Ours is free for ages 1–7.
- Stays of 4+ days mixing city and regions: one weekly price, one car, zero negotiations. See the 7-day route plan for the maths.
The numbers to compare
Economy rental: 55 AZN/day, insurance and delivery included, deposit from 200 AZN refundable. A rough rule from our guests: if your day includes more than four rides or leaves the city at all, the rental is already ahead — and every extra day widens the gap.
