Ready or not, Toyota has a bunch of big changes up its proverbial sleeve for 2024, including the introduction of a back-from-the-dead Land Cruiser (Toyota’s longest-running nameplate) and a (finally) fully redesigned Tacoma.
Obviously, these off-roaders don’t play in the same automotive class-the Land Cruiser being an SUV and the Tacoma classified as a midsize truck-but they still share more than a Toyota badge: platform, engine, tech, off-road features, and more.
See what else binds this unlikely duo in our 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser vs. 2024 Toyota Tacoma specs comparison.
2024 Land Cruiser vs. 2024 Tacoma: Platform
After the demise of our shore’s 200 series Land Cruiser a few years ago (that returned globally as the 300 series to other markets worldwide), a brand new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser returns to our shores as a two-row, five-seater SUV that’s 4.4 inches narrower and 1.2 inches shorter than the outgoing 200 series. And no, it does not replace the U.S.-based 4Runner.
Likewise, a new fourth-generation 2024 Tacoma replaces the outdated third-gen that originally debuted for the 2016 model year.
The Land Cruiser and Tacoma both utilize the TNGA-F (Toyota New Global Architecture F-series) body-on-frame global truck/SUV platform, shared with the new Tundra and Sequoia.
2024 Land Cruiser vs. 2024 Tacoma: Trims
Initial Land Cruiser trims include the First Edition (limited to 5,000 units), 1958, and Land Cruiser. Interestingly, First Edition and 1958 trims get rounded headlights, while the Land Cruiser trim gets rectangular headlights.
The two-or five-passenger midsize 2024 Tacoma truck comes as a two-door (XtraCab) with a six-foot bed or as a four-door (Double Cab) with a five- or six-foot bed. There are eight trims: SR, SR5, TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, Trailhunter, and TRD Pro.d
2024 Land Cruiser vs. 2024 Tacoma: Engines
The Land Cruiser is powered by one hybrid powertrain-Toyota’s new i-Force Max 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and 48-hp electric motor combo that make a combined 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. It’s backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The Tacoma gets this same hybrid i-Force Max mated to an eight-speed automatic on upper trims, but leading up to that premium hybrid are three other combos: base 2.4-liter turbo four-cylinder with 228 hp/243 lb-ft (eight-speed auto; SR only) and i-Force 2.4-liter turbo four-cylinder with 270 hp/310 lb-ft (six-speed manual) or 278 hp/317 lb-ft (eight-speed auto). That’s right: You can get a manual Tacoma.
2024 Land Cruiser vs. 2024 Tacoma: Wheels and Tires
All Land Cruiser come with 18-inch alloy wheels as standard equipment with optional 20s. First Edition and Land Cruiser trims are fitted with a 265/70R18 tire, while the 1958 base trim gets a slightly smaller 245/70R18 size.
The Tacoma, now with four-wheel disc brakes, gets 17- or 18-inch wheels, with 33-inch 265/70R18 Goodyear Territory R/T tires available.
2024 Land Cruiser vs. 2024 Tacoma Tech Features
Upper Land Cruiser trims have a 12.3-inch touchscreen (and gauge display of a similar size), 10-speaker sound system, USB-C data and charging ports, and more. An available Premium package adds tech goodies such as a digital rearview mirror, head-up display, and a 14-speaker JBL audio setup.
Upper Tacoma trims feature a 14.0-inch infotainment screen, 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster display, upgraded 10-speaker JBL sound system (that includes that nifty portable speaker), head-up display, heated and cooled front seats, power running boards and tailgate, USB-C data and charging ports, and more.
2024 Land Cruiser vs. 2024 Tacoma: Colors
The 2024 Land Cruiser will be offered in seven exterior color choices: Ice Cap, Wind Chill Pearl, Underground, Black, and Meteor Shower. Two two-tone colors, Trail Dust and Heritage Blue, feature light gray roofs.
The Tacoma comes in Supersonic Red, Blue Crush Metallic, Underground, Wind Chill Pearl, Solar Octane, Celestial Silver Metallic, Black, Ice Cap, Bronze Oxide, and Terra (TRD Pro-exclusive color).
