Ten-time Grand Prix winner and 1979 title holder Jody Scheckter has complained to journalists that he no longer drives. The reason is simple: the South African moved to Italy when his driver’s license expired. To get his license back, he needs to take courses and pass an exam, but Scheckter is sure that he won’t be able to do this because he doesn’t speak Italian well.
To get out of the vicious circle, Scheckter turned to Ferrari lawyers: the Italian team promised to help, because it was behind the wheel of a red car that the South African won the Formula 1 title in the late 1970s. The general procedure involves six driving lessons, a theoretical and practical exam in Italian. “They’ll definitely fail me,” the former athlete worries.
“Now I have to ride a bike or hire a driver,” said Jody Scheckter. “But it would be nice if they finally gave me my driver’s license back. I have chosen Italy as my country, this is where I want to stay.” However, the bureaucracy in the Apennines is strong, and it is not so easy to overcome it. It is not legally possible to equate the old British license with the new Italian one.
