Land Rover has announced the completion of Defender Dakar D7X-R prototype testing in Morocco and has published images of the SUV prepared for rally raids. This Defender will participate in the Dakar marathon in January 2026. A full presentation of the racing car is scheduled for the end of 2025.
The racing Defender is almost entirely based on the production version of the SUV, as it is preparing to participate in the Stock category. It is equipped with a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8. Other technical specifications have not yet been disclosed.
In total, Land Rover will field three cars. The Dakar sports team will be headed by legendary racer Stephane Peterhansel, who has participated in this rally marathon 35 times and won 14 times. The British plan to enter two racing Defenders in several other stages of the 2026 World Rally Raid Championship.
