Hyundai unveiled a new off-road project in the United States, dubbed the Crater. Officially a concept, it’s billed as a design experiment that takes the XRT line’s philosophy to the extreme. Meanwhile, in September, company management hinted at the possibility of new body-on-frame models in the Hyundai lineup.

The Hyundai Crater looks like an extreme coupe with distinctly off-road ambitions. Its angular, aggressive design is complemented by high ground clearance, powerful 33-inch wheels, and a host of themed accessories, including towing eyes, an expedition rack with a “chandelier” design, and underbody protection.

The Crater’s hinged doors conceal four sport seats with distinctive cylindrical headrests, protected by a safety cage. The trunk is entirely occupied by a semblance of an audio system, while the instrument cluster is filled with four small screens and a head-up display occupying the lower portion of the windshield. The screens mimic the exterior lighting components, including removable side mirror-mounted lights. These also serve as rearview cameras. The steering wheel features buttons for switching driving modes, but no technical specifications are available, although locking differentials are mentioned.
