On October 21, Toyota Motor held the world premiere of a completely new model: the Land Cruiser FJ SUV. Western media aptly dubbed this model the “Baby Cruiser.”
The Land Cruiser FJ truly gravitates toward the compact class: its overall length is 4,575 mm, width 1,855 mm, height 1,960 mm, and wheelbase 2,580 mm. By comparison, the Land Cruiser J250 (Prado) is 350 mm longer, 95 mm wider, but 35 mm lower. The Prado’s wheelbase is 270 mm longer.

The FJ has a frame chassis. The model’s load-bearing side members and crossmembers are part of the IMV0 platform, modifications of which are also used on the Hilux pickup truck, Fortuner SUV, and Innova van.
The new model’s exterior is designed in a deliberately brutal style, and the designers intended it to play on the motifs of famous Land Cruisers of the past, including the still-produced J70. However, the new model also reminds us of Chery’s iCaur/iCar V27, and it seems the “Chinese” model looks no less Land Cruiser-like than the FJ.

In its base configuration, the Land Cruiser FJ will be equipped with a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder 2TR-FE gasoline engine producing 163 hp and 246 Nm of torque.
The curb weight is not disclosed, but Tokyo-based Car Watch reports that the FJ is approximately 200 kg lighter than the Prado, weighing in at around 2,040 kg. The engine is paired exclusively with a 6-speed automatic transmission with a torque converter and part-time all-wheel drive. The front axle is engaged automatically, features a low-range gear ratio, and a rear differential lock. The parking brake is mechanical, with a traditional lever.

Approach and departure angles, as well as other technical details, are not yet being disclosed. Unofficial reports suggest the former is around 30 degrees, while the latter is 20 degrees. The rear axle uses a solid axle.
The Land Cruiser FJ will be produced at the company’s plant in Thailand, the same location where the main Hilux production facilities are located.
