The US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has conducted its first crash tests of the Tesla Cybertruck, which will hit the market in 2023. IIHS announced the tests on its Facebook page, but has not yet released the results. A video of the crash test has appeared on the Gear Mask YouTube channel.
The IIHS safety assessment methodology is considered one of the most stringent in the country. The Cybertruck was subjected to a 40 percent overlap frontal collision with a rigid barrier at 40 mph. This test is more difficult than the one conducted by NHTSA – a 100 percent overlap impact at 35 mph.
The published video shows the extent of the damage. The pickup truck has a broken front left corner, the front left pillar is deformed, while the right and middle ones on the left side apparently survived. The windshield is broken, the airbags have deployed – both front and side curtains.
